The San Blas Islands of Panama is an archipelago comprising approximately 365 islands and cays, of which 49 are inhabited. They lie off the north coast of the Isthmus of Panama, east of the Panama Canal. The islands are home to the Kuna people. The islands could be rendered uninhabitable by sea level rise in the late 21st century,
We landed on one of the uninhabited ones, and a group of Kuna were there to entertain us and sell us souvenirs. Far from being an untouched nirvana, this was them selling mass tourism to passing cruise boats. The uninhabited island had been set up with facilities to service the tourists - tables and benches, and stalls for selling things off. The dance display was lacklustre, the dancers were bored and the souvenirs lacked any real craftsmanship
To say that I was unimpressed would be an understatement. I guess "disappointed" would be the word, I had looked forward to visiting the San Blas, but basically it was no different to any other sandy island in the Caribbean
Mid you it was a very, very nice BBQ that the crew put on
