Half Day City Tour This afternoon kick off your tour with a visit the Institute of Folk Heritage, known as Lok Versa, a small ethnological museum displaying numerous costumes and artefacts from all over Pakistan, after your visit proceed to the Shakarpareian hills and the Pakistan Monument, inspired by Mughal architecture, the monument has four petal like structures symbolizing the four main cultures of Pakistan. From here head to the Faisal Mosque. The mosque was the largest in the world when it was built in the 70s and houses an Islamic university specialising in Philosophy and Law. Finally visit the Marghalla Hills to enjoy magnificent views over the city before taking dinner at one of the many restaurants in old Islamabad where Saidpur Village still survives amid the modern planning.

Skardu Morning Tour This morning you’ll visit the old bazaar, and then head out to see the Manthal Buddha rock carving just outside Skardu. After this you’ll drive to Khaplu for a real treat as you stay in one of the most wonderful heritage hotels in the whole subcontinent. This has been recently converted by the Aga Khan Trust and is a community project.

Khaplu is a beautiful village a few miles east of Skardu with picturesque terraced fields. Khaplu was once a wealthy kingdom and the Khaplu Palace was once the residential fort of the local ruler. From Khaplu you can follow the Shyok and Hushe Rivers into the heart of the Karakoramand up the nearby Hushe Valley, home to Baleygon, the first Wild Frontiers Foundation-supported school.

Hushe Valley Excursion This morning after breakfast you will hop into jeeps and follow the Shyok and Hushe Rivers into the heart of the Karakoram. Draining an enormous area of the eastern Karakoram, much of which is now in India, the Shyok and Hushe rivers cut a spectacular trail into this eastern most part of Baltistan. You’ll drive up the Hushe Valley first to Baleygon, where we’ll check on the first Wild Frontiers Foundation School to see how the kids are getting on in our new classrooms. From here you’ll continue right up the valley to the end of the road where the magnificent 7,821m Mashabrum Mountain stands sentinel. In the late afternoon, as the sun is setting, you’ll return to Khaplu.

Free Day at Khaphu

Hike to Kari Dong & Shigar Walking Tour Set off this morning for the hour long hike up a hill above the Shigar Fort to Shigar's original fort, the 11th century Kari Dong, from here you will have majestic views of the Shigar Valley, whose beautiful landscape has often been compared to Tibet. Back in the town you will take a walking tour visiting sights such as the 14th century Amburik Mosque, the 17th century Khanqah with its wooden lattice ceiling and exploring the labyrinthine bazaar.

Today you will take a day long drive to Gilgit. Following the Indus most of the way, this is a hugely impressive journey.

Gilgit is certainly no postcard town. Encircled by stark black mountains it carries the oppressive feeling of a place cut off from the rest of the world. However, since the opening of the Karakoram Highway and the Kunjarab Pass, the old trade route between China and the subcontinent has flourished giving rise to a teeming bazaar packed with strange goods, animals and people. It is also a superb place to watch frontier polo a wild version of the spectacular sport where few, if any, rules apply.

Today explore some of the sights around Gilgit. Drive out to the nearby site of the Kargah Buddha. This impressive archaeological site dates back to the 6th century AD and shows an image of Buddha carved into the rock face. Next you will be taken to Asia's longest vehicular suspension bridge (182 meters long), which eventually leads you to the Chinese cemetery, the final resting place of thousands of Chinese workers who died during the construction of the Karakoram Highway in the 1970s. Today's drive, 2.5 hours, from Gilgit to Hunza is spectacular, leading you up the Karakoram Highway beside the titanic form of Mount Rakaposhi and on into the beautiful Hunza valley. The sight of this mountain, all 7,788 metres of it, basking in the sun beside the road, will leave you speechless. You can take lunch on the way at the Rakaposhi View Restaurant (not included) – before continuing on to the region’s main town of Karimabad.

Hunza lies on the ancient Silk Road to Kashgar and today the Karakoram Highway follows the same route, with Karimabad being the main town. This small, mountainous region was until recently a semi-autonomous state but is now fully unified with Pakistan. It is one of the most beautiful areas of Pakistan. Cricket, Pakistan's national sport, is often played in the streets .The majority of the region's peoples are Ismaili Muslims.

Today head up above Karimabad town for a water channel walk with spectacular views out across the valley. Head back down into town where you can have lunch in one of the rooftop restaurants. After this you will have time to relax, shop and wander, before taking a sightseeing trip to the famous 15th century Baltit fort, once the seat of power in the Hunza state and recently restored by UNESCO to a fantastic standard. In the late afternoon you'll visit the restored Altit Fort which is around 1000 years old and built during the rule of Ayashoo dynasty.

Gulmit Excursion Today you rejoin the Karakorum Highway and drive to Gulmit (located in Upper Hunza) along the banks of Attabad Lake, newly formed when in January 2010 a massive landslide blocked the Hunza River submerging 22km of the KKH by forming a beautiful azure lake. Here you can take a boat ride towards the northern shore providing a great opportunity to photograph the famous cathedral-like peaks surrounding the lake. On reaching Gulmit you can enjoy a walk through the village and learn more about carpet weaving and other traditional handicrafts as well as visiting the oldest traditional house in Gulmit, around 800 years old. From here you will drive on, stopping en route to see the spectacular Hussaini Hanging Bridge before reaching Passu. In Passu you can enjoy fabulous views of Tupupdan Sar, Passu Peaks, Shispare and Boyohagur, before having some refreshments at the local hotel and then returning to Hunza.
