Oak Ridge styles itself "the Venice of Roatan" because of its boat-oriented transportation. Everyone has their little boats for getting to the stores, restaurants, and so on. Even though Americans' second homes have started to encroach onto the surrounding hillst the charm of this town is still there.
Oak Ridge is known for its Mangrove Tunnel . The intricate network of mangrove canals link these coastal communities, granting commuters safe passage through much calmer waters, instead of going outside the reef into the open ocean. A specific section of these canals cuts through the dense red species of mangroves that grow naturally in the area. No one knows exactly who built it, but these narrow passages create a memorable experience
After a cruise down the tunnel, we were welcomed at the quay by the town band, the town police and the town army. As well as a reporter from the local TV who interviewed Chris in Spanish. We walked away from the quay, and away from the official welcome it was pure Honduras, with pump action shotgun armed guards outside the local stores.
