Pelican Resort, South Water Caye, Belize

South Water Caye is a private island 15 acres in size: it is one of the few islands off Belize that sit right atop the barrier reef. The Pelican Resort is located on 3 1/2 acres on the southern end of the island. Erosion of the beach and island has meant that they have protected the shoreline, and access to swimming is via a couple of new platforms

The hotel itself is old fashioned Caribbean, unpretentious and charming. We were served lunch here - typical of the top of the middle of the market hotel - a buffet washed down with a couple of beers

It was hot and humid, so the beers were very welcome. The one big minus were the tiny sand flies. We both were bitten very badly and the sores took around a week to disappear. They are quite vicious little creatures, so small that you cannot see, then, but they are endemic all the way along this coast from Belize to Panama.

Written on a Belize Forum . Sand Fly. I didn’t see you. You didn’t buzz in my ear or land on my sunburned thigh where I could slap you and kill you like your cousin the mosquito. Were you on the dive boat out at the Blue Hole? Down below the surface at 130 feet? Was that you at Glover’s Reef? Turneffe Island? Or do you live in the drinking water of Belize? Are you something I ingested? Because I arrived in your country and 48 hours later you had covered me from head to toe with bites, hundreds of bites.
