The Silver Cloud is a cruise ship, originally for 300 passengers, which has been adapted for expedition cruises with an ice strengthened hull and a reduced passenger compliment of 200. There was certainly a lot more space than on the Explorer and Discoverer, which both take 100 passengers. In theory there should be a lot of advantages with the larger ship, but in the end I felt that there advantages were vastly outnumbered by the disadvantages The main minus being that taking 200 people ashore in out of the way places in Africa was a lot more difficult that handling 100. The shore facilities like buses and restaurants could not handle the extra numbers, and standards fell
Still the Silver Cloud took us from Accra via many interesting and unusual places to Lisbon:-
