Mumbo is featured in a gorgeous double page spread in the newly-published coffee table book: Africa's Finest. We underwent rigorous testing by an independent environmental assessor and came out with a "near-faultless" score, making our camp one of the Top 50 in Southern Africa in terms of our sustainable practices. This is some of what they had to say about Mumbo: "Mumbo Island was one of only a few places visited and assessed during the Green Safari project that led to Africa's Finest book, which notched a near-faultless score. The story of Mumbo is really the story of the people who made it. This is no slick safari lodge, more the kind of place you go to chill out, taking things slow but sure, the better to capture the magic of the lake of stars
Mumbo Island Camp, accommodating fourteen guests, features tastefully furnished tents with shaded decks, hammocks, hot bucket showers and eco-loos, complemented by a dining area with bar and a watersport gazebo. The whole camp is built of timber, thatch and canvas, and is perched on high rocks overlooking the water, blending with the lush foliage to create a Robinson Crusoe atmosphere of rustic charm. The island is located within an exclusive concession area, guaranteeing privacy in tropical island paradise.
Unlike many African lodges, the decor also maintains the 'green' ethos; almost all the furnishings are locally sourced and made either in the village or in Malawi.

The camp is an eco camp and their approach is indeed very environment friendly. It is run by Kayak Africa and their own description is a "basic camp". However, this is actually very comfortable place. There is no electricity and I actually preferred it - sitting on my deck looking at the lake and the starry African skies - nothing beats that (they provide plenty of lanterns and torchlight, so no need to be worried). The surroundings are beautiful, the lake is full of cichlids just a few yards off the shore. Kayaking, hiking (easy but nice trails), snorkeling, scuba diving, swimming, sunset cruises or just beach relaxation are possible activities. There is essentially zero risk of schistosomiasis (or bilharziosis), which is also an important factor for Lake Malawi travel. I stayed four nights as my getaway from Lusaka and I completely recharged my batteries. The staff is great and very helpful. I will be back as soon as I can.
The island is about 10Km from Cape Maclear and is reached by motorboat transfer. Once there, 7 bungalows are perched overlooking the lake: ours was comfortable, had twin beds and a separate bathroom with bucket shower - filled with hot water on request! The aim of the concession is to be eco neutral - everything is made from natural materials and all waste is removed. Food was very good and the manager, Frank, was friendly (he taught my daughter to play the Malawian game of Bao) and efficient. We swam, snorkelled, walked, kayaked and just chilled on the beach. In the evening there was an optional sunset cruise on the lake, with Malawi gin of course! One of the best places I've ever stayed (and I have travelled a lot). NB not suitable for disabled/infirm guests as there are quite a lot of steps on uneven ground.
