Ten kilometres south of Chintheche is Makuzi Beach Lodge, a small owner-run lodge situated on the northern shores of Lake Malawi – Africa’s third largest fresh water lake. The beach here is soft white sand and is one of Malawi’s few private beaches what makes this secluded retreat even more appealing.
Makuzi Beach Lodge has eight comfortable en-suite stone chalets set in lush gardens overlooking the beach.
There is also a campsite including a barbecue area and an ablution block with hot showers.
The main bar and dining area are built on the rocks above the shoreline.
Although none of the team at Expert Africa have visited Makuzi Beach Lodge, we understand that the food here is good.
You can enjoy African specialities in the restaurant, in the garden or on the beach. The chef makes use of vegetables, fruits and herbs, which are grown on the property or locally.
Makuzi Beach is very eco-friendly. For example they have used local materials to build the lodge and work closely with the local community.
Activities from Makuzi Beach Lodge include a boat trip to Mpandi Kucha Island or walks to nearby villages.
You can also go snorkelling or fishing, and all necessary equipment is provided on-site.
As well as the usual lake activities, it is also possible to visit the nearby Bandawe Mission and orphanage.
Or take a walk on Makuzi Hill from where you will have panoramic views of the lake and the coastline.
The birdlife around the lodge is plentiful, so birdwatchers can definitely enjoy themselves at Makuzi Beach.
If the weather isn’t at its best then board games, cards and books are available at the bar.
stayed there last weekend for one night and I had a very restful time. The great thing about Makuzi Beach Lodge is that it's very private (even though there is no such thing as a "private" beach in Malawi). The contour of the beach with forests on both sides of the beach help to make it more private than other parts of the lake. The food was outstanding, especially the dinner. The bar and restaurant are very cozy and welcoming. The rooms are on par with what you find in most of the high end lodges in Malawi. I had a fan and the room was large enough to spread out. I will definitely want to go back -- it's rare to find such a quiet and peaceful spot on Lake Malawi.
I am not normally someone who finds relaxing easy but at this lodge I somehow just stopped worrying about anything. Many other visitors have commented on how wonderful the place is, the beauty of the scenery and beach, and the standard of accommodation, food and service. All that is true and more. But for me the main thing was that somehow you end up feeling like you are staying with friends, and friends who loved making your visit as relaxing and enjoyable as possible. Furthermore, the lodge is actively involved in supporting the local village and raising funding for their school so that it is possible to see directly how the lives of local Malawians can be improved. I highly recommend having one of the local people take you around the village and the graveyard of European's who died there (mainly Scottish missionaries and their babies, and sadly one of the founders of the lodge). You will be humbled by the villagers and the sacrifice of the people in the graveyard. I cannot recommend this place too highly. You will lose years off your age although you may gain inches around your middle.
